A man who slipped on spilt yoghurt in a Lancashire subway and a woman who fell over a tree stump in the dark are among 30 people currently pursuing injury compensation claims against Preston Council.
Many of the claims made over the past 18 months relate to slips and trips on wet or broken surfaces, with one woman claiming that she hurt herself on broken glass at a bus shelter and a man who says he injured himself on a collapsing bench, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
"The number of claims has reduced, which is part of our efforts to tackle any fraudulent claims received," a council spokesman told the paper.
"It’s something we closely monitor because it has an effect on the taxpayers’ purse."
It follows news that the Unison union helped its members in the south-west to receive nearly GBP 3 million in injury compensation last year.
