A farm worker from Herefordshire has been awarded GBP 45,000 in injury compensation after he lost two fingers in a freak accident.
Dave Bowkett, 53, was made redundant from his job as an apple picker after he lost the index and middle digits on his left hand to faulty machinery, the Sunday Mercury reports.
"My wife had to look after me and my son had to take time off work to drive me to the hospital for my check-ups and even had to help me shave and wash," he told the paper.
An investigation later revealed that the farm machinery that cost Mr Bowkett his fingers was faulty and had not been checked for health and safety hazards, as well as having no safety guard.
The Health and Safety Executive last month staged a safety awareness day for farm workers in Norwich with the aim of preventing accidents like Mr Bowkett’s.
