ASA 'wrong to uphold asbestos complaint'

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is wrong to uphold a complaint about an awareness campaign entitled Asbestos: The hidden killer, it has been claimed.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which launched the advertising campaign, the scheme is in the public interest and the group is seeking an independent review of the adjudication.

The HSE added that the campaign is one of the group’s most effective, with almost three-quarters of tradesmen saying they had taken or plan to take more safety precautions after seeing it.

Steve Coldrick, HSE’s asbestos programme director, commented: "Asbestos is Britain’s biggest work-related killer and significant exposure to asbestos fibres leads to illnesses that currently kill an estimated 4,000 people every year – more than die in road accidents."

Earlier this week, the HSE stressed that farmers and contractors should take extra care to protect their workers now that potato harvesting season is underway.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19374706-ADNFCR
