Businesses 'have a legal requirement to manage risk'

Small businesses have been offered a hand in avoiding injury compensation claims from the UK’s largest insurance company.

As part of its Simply Safety campaign, Aviva is helping small-to-medium-sized enterprises to understand critical health and safety issues, after it emerged that one-quarter of businesses believe they are under pressure to cut safety budgets.

"It is a legal requirement that businesses have a competent person to help them identify and manage risk," commented Phil Grace, liability risk manager at Aviva.

"This could be the business owner, a director, an employee or an external supplier."

He also highlighted the value of keeping up-to-date documentation to help with the reviewing of risk management procedures, which is also vital should the business face an injury compensation claim.
