Construction firm fined over fatal fall

A house building firm in Bolton has been fined GBP 7,500 after a fatal work injury took claimed the life of one of its employees.

Ian Smith, 64, was killed when he fell five metres from an unstable ladder while working on a project to built six new semi-detached houses in Bolton.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the ladder Mr Smith had been using was missing its rubber feet and had not been secured to the building.

"But more importantly, Mr Smith should never have been expected to use a ladder in the first place," said HSE inspector Polly Tomlinson.

"If the work had been planned properly, the stairs would have been fitted before work was carried out on the first and second floors of the house."

It follows news that aviation company Air Livery has been fined GBP 2,400 after an aircraft painter was severely injured in a fall.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19587644-ADNFCR
