Construction firms warned to ‘wrap up safe’

Construction firms across the UK have been reminded to avoid work injuries and injury compensation claims by making sure their sites have been properly "wrapped up" in preparation for Christmas.

In the past five years, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has seen 26 members of the public killed and nearly one thousand injured as a result of poorly-secured locations.

Dangers include material being blown off site, scaffolding collapsing and children gaining access to building sites.

"Children often see poorly guarded sites as playgrounds, so contactors should do all they can to help prevent them gaining access in the first place," advised Richard Boland, head of operations at Construction London.

"They should also ensure that potentially dangerous areas such as deep excavations are secure."

It follows news that Devon-based Stonehouse Design and Build was recently prosecuted by the HSE for exposing its employees to asbestos and illegally disposing of the hazardous material.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19519169-ADNFCR
