A council employee is in line to receive GBP 3,000 in injury compensation after he fell off a ride-on lawnmower.
Steve Hope was working for Cheltenham Borough Council when he fell off the mower after crashing into a park bench in Hatherley Park, breaking two ribs and suffering a punctured lung.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the council had failed to carry out a suitable risk assessment for cutting the grass with the mower and also that the slope Mr Hope was working on was too steep for it.
He had also not received adequate instruction or information before being given the task and similar incidents that had occurred in the past had not been acted upon.
"This incident sends out a clear message to employers to ensure that they carry out risk assessment, taking all site conditions into account, including steepness of slopes, before deciding which equipment is suitable," commented HSE inspector Alison Fry.
The need to provide proper training before using vehicles was highlighted recently when a Staffordshire man suffered serious foot injuries after his forklift truck overturned.
