A couple from Dorset are seeking injury compensation from their tour operator after a break in the Caribbean island of Margarita turned into a terrifying nightmare.
Paul Sparrow and his partner Valerie Roberts had just recovered from a bout of food poisoning when they were attacked by a knife-wielding gang on the beach near their hotel.
"We’d been to the holiday rep’s pep talk and they’d said not to wear jewellery if we went into town but no mention of lawlessness or dangers," commented Mr Sparrow.
The couple were set upon by three men who tied a rope around Mr Sparrow’s neck before stabbing him three times in the back, also attacking his wife and stealing a bag and camera before running away.
Now they are seeking injury compensation from their tour operator First Choice, also claiming that "appalling" levels of hygiene in their hotel led to the food poisoning.
The case comes soon after reports that a man from Norwich, who also booked a holiday through First Choice, has launched a compensation claim after being struck with dysentery in the Dominican Republic.
