Firm fined over mixer machine injury

A food processing company in County Durham has been fined GBP 7,500 and may be subject to an injury compensation claim after a work injury caused one employee to lose two fingers to a mixer machine.

The worker was attempting to clear away meat from the opening of a mixer onto a conveyor at the Ravendale Foods site in Consett when his left hand came into contact with the rotating paddles, severing the index and middle fingers of his hand.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Cain Mitchell commented: "This incident could have easily been prevented if Ravendale Foods Ltd had identified the risks from using the machine, ensured suitable guarding was in place on the machine and that staff were properly trained in how to use it."

HSE recently prosecuted a Wednesbury-based firm for failing to report a work injury in which a mezzanine floor collapsed, trapping him between 1,000kg bags of rice and beans.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19514056-ADNFCR
