Two firms have been fined a total of GBP 8,500 after a man was injured in an accident at work in London.
James Richards was working at Abingdon Villas in Abingdon Court, Allen Road in Kensington when the incident took place on December 4th 2008.
Triton Building Restoration Ltd was the principal contractor of the work that was being carried out on the building.
Fire Escape Ltd had been subcontracted to complete the restoration of the cast iron fire escape and external repair and painting.
Mr Richards fell six storeys down an unguarded shaft in the centre of the building that gives natural light.
He suffered broken bones in his back, a broken arm, pelvis and rib and a punctured lung and he had to have his spleen removed.
Monica Babb, inspector at the Health and Safety Executive, said: "This was a serious and entirely preventable incident that will affect Mr Richards for the rest of his life."
Earlier this month, IFT Services Ltd, of Victoria Street, Shirebrook, was fined GBP 4,000 after an accident at work saw a man fall from a barn roof.
