Food supplier fined after employee's hand is crushed

Bakkavor Foods was fined GBP 3,000 and ordered to pay costs of GBP 2,000 after a worker’s hand was crushed while clearing a blockage in a cabbage washing line.

The machine, which had not been properly isolated prior to the blockage being cleared, had had the guard protecting employees from the screw conveyor removed.

Commenting on the conclusion of the Grantham Magistrates’ Court case, Health and Safety Executive Jo Anderson said: "The employee suffered the injury whilst working a night shift and this unfortunate incident sends out a clear message on the importance of companies maintaining the same standard of care to employees on a night shift as on a day shift."

The case comes after a window manufacturer was fined GBP 10,000, following the loss of an employee’s finger at its Dudley factory.

M&M Windows’ worker Jeremy Adams needed to have a finger amputated and extensive surgery on another, following the accident.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19627004-ADNFCR
