Devon county council could face car accident compensation claims from motorists after speed bumps in Honiton were described as ‘illegal’ at a town council meeting.
Local woman Kerrie Freeman seriously damaged her car while driving over one of the speed bumps, resulting in a repair bill which cost her almost £700, the Midweek Herald reports.
The accident ripped out her Fiat Punto’s brake pipe, one of the handbrake cables and the sump.
Additionally, her children were in the car when the incident occurred and could have been injured.
"I pursued Devon county council for compensation in 2007 and got nowhere," Miss Freeman told the paper.
A spokesperson for the council said the humps were not illegal and while they are currently being removed the work has "nothing whatsoever" to do with Miss Freeman’s claim.
The BBC recently reported that local councils in England paid out £53 million in compensation for damage caused to cars by potholes last year.
