Man severs fingers in accident at work at bagel factory

A man severed his fingers in an accident at work, resulting in his employer being fined GBP 2,250.

Mr Raakesh Patel, from Harrow, was clearing a blockage in a machine at Ixxy's Bagels factory in Park Royal, North West London, in November 2007, when the accident took place.

The middle and ring fingers on his right hand were severed down to the knuckle by a moving blade.

Ixxy's Bagels Ltd was aware that there was a fault with the machine, allowing the rotating blade to continue even when the rear doors were open.

Health and Safety Executive inspector Jack Wilby said: "Work equipment must be maintained in an efficient state and in good working order."

Earlier this month, manufacturing firm B&B Group Ltd was fined GBP 12,500 after a man severed his finger in an accident at work involving a drill.

This incident took place in Wigan on September 24th 2009.
