A Michelin Tyre Plc employee has been awarded GBP 23,300 after making a compensation claim for exposure to asbestos dust at work.
Roy Ibbs now suffers from a respiratory disease and was too ill to attend the London High Court to give evidence last week, the Sentinel reports.
His barrister Colin McCaul QC told the court how Mr Ibbs had worked for the tyre company between 1969 and 1985, during which time he was exposed to "frequent and heavy" clouds of asbestos dust.
He now suffers from asbestosis and as an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, which is an incurable form of lung cancer.
"There must have been a significant amount of dust at the factory. It’s probably fair to say there were former colleagues exposed to the same conditions," the newspaper reports Mr McCaul as saying.
This could, potentially lead many other employees of the firm to make similar compensation claims.
In another recent case of work injury compensation, a hospital porter was awarded a cash payout after an accident at work left him in need of daily medication.
