Employers have been warned to be on their guard against work injuries and injury compensation claims after it was revealed that slips and trips caused more than 180 serious accidents last year in Bedfordshire alone.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is launching a new campaign designed to raise awareness of the importance of providing a safe working environment, as slips and trips cost society an estimated GBP 800 million each year.
"These figures highlight the very real and serious nature of preventable slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace," commented Gareth Broughton, principal HSE inspector in Berkshire.
"Slips, trips and falls might sound funny but they shatter the lives of thousands of British workers ever year."
Three workers in London lost their lives last year in slip and trip incidents in the workplace, according to HSE figures, as well as causing 3,517 workers to need to take three days off work.
