Sports centre worker receives GBP 50k for back injury

A sports centre supervisor has received GBP 50,000 in injury compensation after a work injury forced him to retire.

David Barber, from Rochdale, had worked at Haywood Sports Centre for more than 20 years and made repeated complaints about a faulty set of swimming pool steps, but was told that fixing them was not a priority.

The 62-year-old hurt his back while lifting the steps and despite his pain and injury was made to carry out further lifeguard training at the sports centre.

Mr Barber currently requires care from his wife and will need epidural injections for the rest of his life.

He commented: "The worst thing about the injury has been going from being hugely active to unable to do the gardening, or drive, or travel easily – it’s that loss of independence."

The case follows news that a school caretaker from Kirkby has received over GBP 3,000 in injury compensation after sustaining a hernia while lifting a room divider.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19332217-ADNFCR
