A roofing firm has been fined GBP 2,500 after it was found to be putting its employees at risk of being involved in accidents at work.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector visited Independent Business Park in East Grinstead when BRC Industrial Roofing Specialists Ltd was carrying out work on January 5th.
The inspector witnessed two BRC employees standing on an asbestos roof with no means to stop them falling eight and a half metres to the floor below.
HSE inspector Russell Beckett said that nearly a quarter of all roofers killed at work die in falls from height.
"Falls through fragile materials, such as rooflights and asbestos cement roofing sheets, account for more of these deaths than anything else," he said.
Back in December, James Thompson, who traded as James Thompson Carpentry and Building, was fine GBP 10,000 after a contractor he had employed suffered a broken back in an accident at work.
