Toilet roll company fined GBP 10k for accident at work

A toilet roll manufacturer has been fined GBP 10,000 following an accident at work which left an employee with serious injuries.

Intertissue Ltd, of Brunel Way, Baglan Energy Park in Neath, was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following the incident, which involved Phillip Evans.

The 43-year-old employee was helping a shift supervisor to clear paper from a steel roller when his hand got caught, resulting in three of his fingers being crushed.

Intertissue Ltd pleaded guilty to a charge under Regulation 11(1) of the Provisions and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and was fined GBP 10,000 and ordered to pay GBP 1,365 costs by Neath Port Talbot Magistrates' Court.

HSE inspector Stuart Charles said: "Mr Evans's injuries would have been avoided if simple precautions, in this case a machine guard, had been in place."
