Some GBP 28 million has been awarded in personal injury compensation to members of one of the country’s largest trade union this year.
Back injuries, slips and falls made up some of the most common work injuries in the 3,700 legal cases in which injury compensation was awarded to Unison members.
"It is disgraceful that in 2009 so many Unison members have suffered crippling back injuries, when, given the proper training or equipment, these could be prevented," commented Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison.
He added: "I am calling on all employers to do all they can to make 2010 a safe and injury free year for their staff."
