Welsh schools pay out GBP 225,000 in injury compensation

Schools across North Wales have paid out some GBP 225,000 in injury compensation to teachers, parents and pupils over the past five years, it has been revealed.

One teacher was awarded GBP 17,568 after falling over while assisting a lesson, while another got GBP 7,780 when he injured himself while stretching.

A pupil at Ysgol y Castell in Rhuddlan was awarded GBP 3,081 in injury compensation after falling in a pothole and a teacher received GBP 2,000 for a similar injury in 2004 St Asaph’s Ysgol Glan Clwyd.

"Whatever the actual situation, councils must learn from the good practice of the best in order to minimise injuries and maximise efficient use of resources," commented North Wales Assembly member Mark Isherwood.

It follows news that nearly GBP 3 million has been paid out in injury compensation this year to members of the Unison union, which represents workers in the public sector.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19534534-ADNFCR
